Signs your shutter motor is failing
- Shutter doesn't respond at all to the switch or remote
- Motor hums but the shutter doesn't move
- Shutter moves slower than usual or struggles on the way up
- Shutter stops halfway or doesn't stop at the right top or bottom position
- Motor cuts out after a few cycles (overheating)
- Burning smell, grinding or clicking from the motor area
It's not always the motor
A large share of "dead motor" calls turn out to be a cheaper fault elsewhere. Before recommending a new motor, we check:
| Symptom | Often actually caused by |
|---|---|
| No response at all | Tripped breaker, isolator off, faulty wall switch or key switch, control box fault |
| Remote not working, wall switch fine | Remote battery, lost remote pairing, faulty receiver |
| Stops at the wrong position | Limit switch out of adjustment |
| Humming, no movement | Jammed curtain, failed capacitor or brake. Sometimes the motor itself |
| Clicking | Relay or contactor fault in the control box |
If the problem is the control box, switch, limit setting or remote, the repair is usually much cheaper than a new motor.
Motor types we handle
- Tubular motors, inside the barrel, common on smaller shopfront and residential shutters
- Side-mounted / external motors, common on larger commercial and industrial shutters
- Chain hoist motors with manual chain override
- Control boxes, wall switches, key switches, remote receivers and safety sensors
Shutter motor replacement process
- Diagnose the fault and confirm the motor is the cause.
- Measure the shutter's size and weight to select a motor with the right torque or lifting capacity.
- Quote you before ordering or fitting anything.
- Install the motor, connect the controls, set the upper and lower limits, and test multiple cycles.
- Show you how to use the manual override in case of a power failure.
Shutter motor replacement price
Motor replacement starts from $600. Control box, switch and remote repairs start from $150. The final price depends on the motor size needed for your shutter's weight, the motor type and access.
